Autumn 2019 Season
At OXFORD PLAYHOUSE
Oxford Playhouse is delighted to launch its new Autumn 2019 Season, playing from August 2019 to January 2020. Autumn features a diverse array of shows, from world-premiere literary adaptations and West End hit musicals, to spectacular circus, comedy and plenty of family fun.
The very best drama remains at the core of the Playhouse’s programme. Autumn 2019 Drama highlights include the moving and evocative hit West End production of Nigel Slater’s Toast; Laura Wade’s dark comedy, Posh; a major revival of Pulitzer Prize shortlisted modern classic Two Trains Running and the acclaimed stage adaptation of Alice Sebold’s world-famous novel, The Lovely Bones. The season also sees Emma Rice’s Wise Children return to the Playhouse with their second production, Malory Towers, based on Enid Blighton’s classic stories and set to sensational live music and breathtaking animation.
This season, Oxford Playhouse also welcomes two National Theatre productions – Stephen Daldry’s radical, challenging and visionary version of JB Priestley’s classic thriller An Inspector Calls; and Inua Ellams’ acclaimed, heart-warming and hilarious play Barber Shop Chronicles, in a co-production with Fuel Theatre and Leeds Playhouse.
Alongside classic drama, autumn at the Playhouse is full-to-the-brim with dance, circus and boundary-pushing contemporary work. Australian circus company Circa test the limits of human strength and flexibility in their beguiling show, Humans, direct from the Edinburgh Fringe; James Wilton Dance presents their latest production, The Storm - a whirlwind of acrobatics, break dancing and martial arts; and Ballet Black returns with a thrilling triple-bill. Oxford Playhouse and science festival IF Oxford also presents Only Expansion, a visceral unique audio-walk through Oxford as part of the Playhouse Plays Out programme.
Christmas in Oxford isn’t complete without a trip to the Playhouse’s annual pantomime! This year it’s Beauty and the Beast, which will be packed with super singing, dazzling dancing and lashings of slapstick silliness for the whole family to enjoy. For the little ones, there’s the Playhouse’s enchanting co-production of The Jolly Christmas Postman in the Burton Taylor Studio. Adapted from the best-selling book by Janet and Allan Ahlberg, this timeless tale is brought to life in a brand new show full of music, puppetry and magical storytelling.
